Effects of extraction method and storage of dry tissue on marine lipids and fatty acids ArchiMer
Sardenne, Fany; Bodin, Nathalie; Metral, Luisa; Crottier, Anais; Le Grand, Fabienne; Bideau, Antoine; Brisset, Blandine; Bourjea, Jerome; Saraux, Claire; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Kerzerho, Vincent; Bernard, Serge; Rouyer, Tristan.
Various protocols are currently used to study marine lipids, but there is a growing interest in working on dry samples that are easier to transport. However, reference protocols are still lacking for dry samples. In order to make recommendations on this use, lipid classes and fatty acids (FA) obtained from six analytical protocols using two different tissue states (dry vs wet) and three extraction methods (automat vs manual potter vs leaving the solvent to work on tissue) were compared. Three dry storage modes of tissue (freezer vs gas nitrogen vs dry room) during one and three months were also compared. These comparisons were made on seven marine species with different lipid profiles, including fishes, crustaceans and mollusks. Lipid classes and FA...

Fiches pratiques d’aide à l'identification des espèces marines de Méditerranée occidentale pour la campagne de chalutage MEDITS ArchiMer
Metral, Luisa; Brisset, Blandine.

Food in the Sea: Size Also Matters for Pelagic Fish ArchiMer
Queiros, Quentin; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Gasset, Eric; Dutto, Gilbert; Huiban, Camille; Metral, Luisa; Leclerc, Lina; Schull, Quentin; Mckenzie, David; Saraux, Claire.
Small pelagic fish are key components of marine ecosystems and fisheries worldwide. Despite the absence of recruitment failure and overfishing, pelagic fisheries have been in crisis for a decade in the Western Mediterranean Sea because of a marked decline in sardine size and condition. This situation most probably results from bottom-up control and changes in the plankton community toward smaller plankton. To understand such an unusual phenomenon, we developed an original and innovative experimental approach investigating the mechanisms induced by a reduction in the quantity and size of sardine prey. While experimentations offer the unique opportunity to integrate behavior and ecophysiology in understanding key demographic processes, they remain rarely...

Growth of European hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the Gulf of Lions based on conventional tagging ArchiMer
Mellon-duval, Capucine; De Pontual, Helene; Metral, Luisa; Quemener, Loic.
Growth of European hake was estimated from the results of a conventional tagging study in the Gulf of Lions, the first tagging experiment to have been undertaken on the species in Mediterranean waters. In all, 4277 hake 15–40 cm long were tagged and released on the inshore fishing grounds during spring 2006. The overall recapture rate was 6.5% and times-at-liberty ranged from 1 to 717 d. Growth rate in hake varied with size and sex. The estimated growth parameter (von Bertalanffy k) was estimated as double previously published values based on size frequency distribution in the area. Compared with recent growth parameters derived from the tagging experiments in the Bay of Biscay, k was estimated to be slightly lower in the Gulf of Lions. With this faster...

Guide de prélèvements des otolithes chez les grands pélagiques ArchiMer
Evano, Hugues; Metral, Luisa; Brisset, Blandine; Bourjea, Jerome; Nikolic, Natacha; Mahe, Kelig.

Seasonal habitat and length influence on the trophic niche of co-occurring tropical tunas in the eastern Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Sardenne, Fany; Diaha, N'Guessan Constance; Amande, Monin Justin; Zudaire, Iker; Couturier, Lydie; Metral, Luisa; Le Grand, Fabienne; Bodin, Nathalie.
In the Gulf of Guinea, bigeye Thunnus obesus (BET) and yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares (YFT) are important for commercial fisheries and play a prominent ecological role as top predators. Using fatty acid profiles and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes we examined their niche partitioning in this understudied region. Niche overlap was high (>70%), similar to percentages in other ocean basins. BET occupied a higher trophic position than YFT and fed on deeper prey (high δ15N values and high proportions of mono-unsaturated fatty acids). The trophic position of YFT decreased slightly in the last 15 years (δ15N values decrease ~0.5 ‰) suggesting a change in epipelagic communities, as observed in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Ontogenic changes were limited to...

This document presents all the techniques used in routine by Ifremer to estimate the age of fish from the calcified piece. The procedure for estimating age describes each technical stage from the taking of the calcified piece through to the supplying of key sizes/ages to the European work groups. This procedure is specific to each species and even each population of fish.

Trophic ecology of the European Hake in the Gulf of Lions, Northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Mellon, Capucine; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Metral, Luisa; Loizeau, Veronique; Mortreux, Serge; Roos, David; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
The European hake, Merluccius merluccius, is an important resource for Mediterranean fisheries. This study focuses on juvenile and adult hake feeding ecology in the Gulf of Lions, using information from scientific surveys carried out during two seasons and three years (2004-2006). Stomach content and stable isotope (ä15N, ä13C) analyses were performed, and the main factors explaining variations in ä15N were investigated using GLMs. In the Gulf of Lions, hake mostly fed on crustaceans and fish and a dominant piscivorous regime was reached at 15 cm total length. Pelagic fish (sardine, anchovy and small blue whiting) were the main source of prey (40%-80%) and cannibalism was low (<5%). The results confirmed that hake is an opportunistic feeder and also...
